“Ne? Kagome-chan?”

Kagome looked up from the wash she was savagely beating to glance at Sango. They rarely talked these days. The easy friendship they once had was gone. Kagome had tried. She really had, but for the moment, a moment that was lasting well into months now, she was proud of herself at simply being civil. If it hadn't been wash day she was sure she would have gone another week avoiding the ex-demon slayer.

“Is there something wrong?”

Kagome wanted to laugh. Was Sango really asking her if she was ok? Of all people?

“Why would you think that?”

Sango gestured to Miroku's robe. Kagome had just tore a hole in one of the sleeves. Kagome gasped.

“Oh great!”

The baby on Sango's back whimpered at the loud noise and Sango shifted and rocked to soothe the boy back to sleep.

Kagome sat down on the rocks and threw the robe down in aggravation. Now her bad mood was disturbing infants. Wonderful.

Sango looked at Kagome thoughtfully. She could tell something was troubling her and wished to help. Sango wanted nothing more than to breech the gap in their relationship.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Kagome didn't look at Sango. Did she want to talk about it? If she did, would the person she talked to be Sango? Honestly, Kagome didn't even know exactly what the problem was anyway.

“Do you know where Miroku is now?”

Sango sat down on a large rock nearby, rocking back and forth.

“No?”

“He left yesterday to see Mushin.”

Sango was confused.

“Oh. Well, he hasn't seen Mushin in a while. I guess it's good to know he is still living.”

Kagome sniffed.

“You know Miroku is going to con his way into inns along the way and most likely seduce a woman or two or ten. When I tried to go with him...,” Kagome stood back up and placed her hands on her hips, “he got evasive. A smoothing talking snake charmer is what he is! He had all these seemingly valid reasons as to why I shouldn't come so I caved and it wasn't until after he left I realized he told me no without telling me no, the jerk.”

“So you're upset with Miroku?”

Kagome whirled around.

“Didn't I just say that? Were you even listening?”

“Do you know why he went to see Mushin?”

Kagome sat back down with a pout.

“He didn't tell me.”

Sango watched Kagome quietly for a moment. It had been a while since she had seen her act this way. Years in fact. It reminded her of when Inuyasha would disappear to see Kikyo.

“What exactly bothers you about him leaving?”

Kagome sat up straighter.

“I don't care if he leaves or where he goes!”

Sango smiled.

“Yet, here you are, angry with him. Why is that?”

“Sango, you know as well as I do the trouble he could get into. What if he come across a demon with his wind tunnel all alone and what about all those unsuspecting inn keepers and women? I could have helped him with the demons and kept him from doing...,” Kagome blushed, “you know.”

Sango stood up and went over to her own wash.

“Kagome, Miroku was able to survive well enough on his own for the three years you were gone. He has made trips to see Mushin alone many times, all with out the wind tunnel.”

Kagome glared balefully at Sango's back.

“Also, not that I am condoning Miroku's lecherous ways, but what he does with other women really isn't any of our business is it?”

Kagome stood back up, furious. How could Sango calmly say such a thing when before she nearly beat the monk to death for the same reasons?

“Maybe it's not yours anymore but it is mine.”

Sango turned back to face Kagome her wash on one hip.

“Is it? Are you his wife? Wouldn't it be a good thing for Miroku to find happiness and make the big family he has always wanted? I think you're being selfish Kagome.”

Kagome flinched.

Sango sighed and walked away. She knew today was not going to be the day that their old friendship would began to heal.

Kagome watched her walk away and held her tongue. There were quite a few things she'd like to say to her but Kagome chose not to. As much as she didn't like to admit it Sango did have at least one valid point. She wasn't Miroku's wife or keeper. They were just friends. Best of friends. He was perhaps the best friend she had ever had. A real friend, based on knowing each others feelings without the whole coming to the rescue bit she had with Inuyasha. Not that Miroku hadn't done that a time or two for her and her for him either.

Still, the idea of Miroku rolling around in the proverbial hay with some village girl didn't sit well with her. The idea of him actually bringing home a bride made her sick to her stomach. Didn't she want Miroku to be happy? Was Sango right? Was she selfish?

Kagome gasped and felt her knees give way as she collapsed back onto a large rock. Her hands slowly came to cover her mouth. She wasn't selfish. Was she...was she in love with Miroku? Flashes of violet eyes and clasped hands flitted through her mind. Soft smiles and firm hugs. Strong fingers smoothing hair back behind her ears. Warm tea and long nights by her side while she cried. Miroku. Why had he done all those things? Stayed by her side? Was it all just, friendship?

Kagome stood back up. This time with a light in her eyes that had been gone since before her return. She was not going to just sit at home like Miroku insisted. She was going after him.

Kagome took off running for her house. Her bow and arrows. If she was going to do this she needed protection. She be damned if she asked Inuyasha.

She needed to see him. She needed to know. Maybe it seemed impulsive but she couldn't wait. She felt when she saw his face again she would know for sure. Know if what she was feeling was love and if maybe, just maybe, he felt the same.

Kagome rounded the river's bend and out of sight. Inuyasha jumped down to the spot Kagome had just vacated from the small cliff he had been watching her from. He picked up Miroku's abandon and torn robe and chuckled.

“Good luck monk. You're gonna need it.”
