"Headmaster? What are those...creatures...you have with you?"

"Well, the gilr--"

"Do you mean 'girl'?"

"No, Minerva. I mean 'gilr.' I think it's a kind of venomous lizard from the American Southwest."

"She looks as if she's more mammalian than reptilian."

"That's because she's half fox. And half human, of course."

"Half fox, half human, and all lizard. How is that even possible, pray tell?"

"Obviously it is possible. She is here, after all."

"...And the other--entity?"

"Oh, that's her friend, Mercury. He's a Naga. Half snake, half human."

"Albus, we have more than enough Slytherins at Hogwarts already."

"That was unkind."

"But accurate. What do you propose doing with these...beings?"

"I was thinking of adopting them. I have already, I suppose. Unofficially."

"Unofficially?"

"Well...I've fed them. And talked to them. I'd like to think of myself as their friend. Their bestest fwiend forevah."

"I see. Tell me, can these creatures do magic? Quite unusual magic, perhaps? Elemental mages? Vampire slayers? Whitelighters?"

"Why, yes! However did you guess?"

"Do their hair and eyes--no, never mind. The male has answered my question. His eyes changed from forest green to topaz orange to sapphire blue. And the fox-Gila monster's hair just altered from long and wavy black to rainbow-coloured."

"Such a rare and beautiful talent."

"If your name happens to be Nymphadora Tonks. Is there perchance some prophecy connected to them?"

"Oh, yes. Children of destiny, you know. They must be protected--while they're guarding Harry, of course."

"Oh, they're important in Harry's life?"

"Vital. He will never defeat the Dark Lord without their aid. So has it been written from the depths of ages. How fortunate we are that I happened to discover them as I was wandering through the Forbidden Forest."

"Fortunate indeed. Headmaster, would you please tell the--Destined Ones--to come with me? I can tell already that they will be Gryffindors. Even the Slytherin. I mean, the Naga."

"Of course. Go with her, my children. Professor McGonagall will see to your comforts."

"...I certainly will."

***

"Minerva?"

"Yes, Albus? Are you feeling better?"

"I'm...not certain. I seem to recall finding some animal-human hybrids in the Forest and resolving to adopt them. And I think that my eyes were twinkling uncontrollably."

"You did, and they were."

"Oh, dear. How much damage did the creatures do?"

"Not much. I fed them to the Giant Squid before their universe-warping destinies could take full effect."

"Hardly kind to the poor squid."

"I don't know. It seems to thrive on a diet of Sues and Stus. If you like, I can have Hagrid feed them to Aragog and his children next time."

"Next time."

"There's always a next time. You-Know-Who seems to have an endless army of Sues. And no matter how many we kill, there are always more."

"Let us hope that when Harry finally defeats Voldemort, the Sues will die with their master."

"...We couldn't possibly be so lucky."
