Summary There are times when the syntax describes us more accurately than the words.
Notes: Also part of my fanfic100; Ginny/Luna table - prompt #30 - Death. The poem that Luna is thinking about is "since feeling is first" by e.e. cummings.

The quote rose unbidden to the surface of Luna's mind as everyone around them broke into sentence fragments and though she murmured it ("death i think is no parenthesis," she murmured, though no one else heard), it made no sense until she turned it over once again. A parenthesis, of course, indicates an explanation, a digression from strictly linear thought, but death is not a digression. Death is a period, of course. A full stop; this thought is over now - let's start another, but it doesn't have to be here.

Ginny curled further in on herself as the small items on the side table shook in the wake of an invisible dinosaur and the lights flickered a pattern that might have been Morse code for "Hello. I am in hell. Hot. Send Help." All eyes were on Harry, who was indeed burning with rage and hate and grief and invisible dinosaurs, save Hermione's as they were closed and overflowing. And Ginny's that tracked her own progress earthward. And Luna's that tracked Ginny, though she really felt just as badly as everyone else, even knowing that not all eyes were on Harry.

Luna crept forward as Ginny folded over and let her body lapse into a comma, waiting for the next bit of sentence to finish her off.

There was nothing left for Luna to do but wrap her arms around Ginny and hope an ampersand would do.
