A/N: I really really tried for crack on this one but this story would not leave my mind so, err, no crack, sorry. I'd love to hear what you think anyway...
The laughter of the guard as the door clanged shut should have scared him but Sirius didn't believe he would be in here long. Remus would surely not believe the lies and would make sure that a full and proper investigation, one that would exonerate him, was completed. He was innocent, after all, and innocent people didn't stay in Azkaban. Azkaban was for people like Malfoy or MacNair or Bellatrix. Azkaban was for Pettigrew.
As he paced the confines of his cell, he fixated on his rage at the betrayal. It was better for his own sanity not to think about the deaths of James and Lily. Pettigrew was dead and Sirius couldn't take revenge, as much as he wanted to.
Hours passed and his pacing slowed until he sat on his bed and waited. Surely it was only a matter of time until Remus came with the Aurors to release him.
Days passed and he slept fitfully while refusing to eat the disgusting food pushed through the door twice a day. It wouldn't be much longer before Remus came though with a smile and a hug.
Weeks passed and Sirius adapted to the odd sleep pattern of life in prison. The food hadn't improved but he'd tired of the gnawing in his gut. Sirius idly wondered how Remus was coping with the full moon without his friends.
The screams came without warning. The room froze and Sirius saw the burning house that he'd spent so many happy times in Godric's Hollow. He could hear his mother screaming at him to get out, get out of her house.
"Away from him now, you've done enough!" The voice echoed through the door of his cell and Sirius collapsed onto the floor.
"Dementors. Sometimes they get a bit hungry." Footsteps receeded down the hall and Sirius was left alone with those horrible memories in his mind's eye.
Months passed and the Dementors came again. Sirius stopped sleeping. When he slept, he dreamed of happier times and the Dementors always chose these times to feed off those memories. It was hard to remember what Harry looked like as a baby any more.
The only time he had peace when he slept was as Padfoot. For some reason, the Dementors weren't able to feed off him when he was remembering the romps as Padfoot, with Remus during the full moon.
Years passed and Sirius spent more time as Padfoot than he did as Sirius. The Dementors still came past his cell but his memories were trapped deep within Padfoot. Instead of remembering bouncing Harry on his knee or cavorting with his friends, Padfoot remembered chasing a rabbit through the Forbidden Forest.
His cell had become a doggy dog world where memories of humanity slipped away.
