And I'm pretty sure that the average member of the GOP will believe whatever they're told by their religious/political leader du jour.

Eh, don't get me started on the people who tell Our Imperious Leader what he believes, and I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion of the position of facts these days. Just compare the response of a reporter as to the definition of "theory" vs. "hypothesis" and the response of a credible scientist (or an English teacher for that matter).
