Normally they are pretty shy, but like a number of other bird species, I think they are beginning to learn that humans in urban areas don't pose that much of a threat to them.

Some insecure people feel threatened by the idea that others know more than they do, as it calls into question the quality of their own intelligence/knowledge. At least, I used to have a friend who told me this is how he felt about people who knew things he didn't
I was pretty taken the first time I saw a nighthawk at WRC. Unfortunately, they tend not to do well with the stress of captivity. I don't know that I ever saw one survive to recovery.
