There was laughter unhinged by alchohol and unhindered by the daily tedium upset by the cheerful, content atmosphere of the party. An older woman and a strong-jawed gentleman with Peter's green eyes greeted him.
"Hi," Gabriel fumbled, "Hello. I'm Gabriel Gray...maybe Peter mentioned me?"
He immediately winced, wishing he had never said those words. What could he possibly have said? *By the way, I stopped this depressed watchmaker from offing himself the other day. What have you been up to lately?*
"Hello, Gabriel," the woman said warmly, though to Gabriel, her eyes seemed cold and distant. To Gabriel's relief, he saw Peter's lanky figure heading through the crowd toward them.

"I am not surly." Nathan glared at him before turning to the recently entered man. "I don't remember Peter mentioning you before, Mr. Gray."
Peter sighed. "Can we save the Inquisition for later, guys? You have fun with it on holidays, remember? Plus the whole high court isn't here and Dad would be upset if you began the flogging without him," Peter said quickly, grabbing Gabriel by the elbow and making an attempt at escape.

"I, uh..." he said, once Peter had slowed down enough that Gabriel could keep up with his long-legged stride. "I brought wine." Gabriel knew next to nothing about wine, but the man in the rimless glasses and the trimmed goatee who worked at the little wine shop down the street had convinced him to spend forty dollars on something in an embossed silver label.
The watchmaker was looking fidgety and out-of-place among the expensively clothed, animatedly chatting partygoers. He had traded his sweater vest for a long-sleeved shirt made out of some sort of dark blue linen material and a pair of black slacks. They were clearly new clothes that he had never worn before, and he kept tugging nervously at the sleeves.
