Well, I've been more active on LJ communities than is entirely good for me lately. It's a procrastination thing.
Recently, on
polyamory (I'd link it, but it's friends-locked) an 18 year old bisexual woman, who's in college, asked the bunch of us if it would be ok for her to have sex with one of her 15 year old friends. The 18 year old is looking to explore that side of her sexuality (without breaking up with her boyfriend, of course) and the 15 year old is "questioning." Several people have told the 18 year old to go ahead with it, but carefully so she doesn't get arrested (this is in VA, where it constitutes statutory rape.) The 18 year old describes her last relationship as "extremely posessive and abusive" and says that having sex with the younger girl would really be ok, because the 15 year old's last boyfriend was 21 (and for all we know, that was a year or so ago).
Ye fucking gods! Could we get a more classic example of a budding "I got abused, so now I'm going to take the power. I'll find someone who's used to being abused, and be a little bit better to them than their last partner, and they'll love me for it!"? Not to mention an older partner interfering with a young person's natural process of figuring out their own orientation- all out of a personal desire to finally get some pussy. The idea makes me ill! I told her to get some freaking therapy and stay away from the jailabit (I was unfortunately polite about it).
About half of the respondents really seem to think this situation is OK, a 15 year old is mature enough to "use her own vagina" however she wants and that her previous relationship with the 21 year old was probably OK, too.
And, you know, when I was in high school a couple of seniors were dating freshmen. Probably, a few of them had sex. Probably, a few of them were fairly equal relationships. But we all thought that was fairly sketchy at the time. But I remember 15- sex crazed and completely incapable of making a rational decision except by accident. And I was one of the mature ones. A few of the girls having sex at that age were in control of their own sexuality. Most of them were being used, especially the ones who were dating people who'd already graduated.
The "statutory rape is never OK" camp is decidedly in the minority. Fortunately, the mod's a part of it, and it looks like she's probably going to delete the post, ban the OP, and forbid future discussion on the subject under LJ's illegal behavior statute. Usually, I'd abhor this kind of heavy-handed modding, but here I feel like it's called for.
And the whole thing has me seriously wondering what the fuck I'm doing talking to these people.
exedore, I'll take one of those "Drama" icons now, please :-P
