Utility or Truth?

Just a minute ago, I ran a Google search to make sure I had a Heisenberg quote right: "What we observe is not nature itself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning." Much to my surprise, the first couple links I clicked on were actually not scientific websites. One of them was titled Questioning the Scientific Worldview and seemed to be ( Read more... )

Aren't you supposed to be studying maniacally or something? How is it that you have time to not only have these deep thoughts but to get them out on lj as well?

You're making the rest of us look bad. ;-)

Hehe. Why do you think I'm doing this? It's the way my brain works. The more I have to do, the more I do. My favorite way to procrastinate is to be fantastically productive at something else! Thinking about one thing gets my brain warmed up, and I start thinking about other things, too. (Being able to read and type really fast doesn't hurt either.)

I also read an absolutely fascinating paper out of Temple University on street harassment within the African American community, yesterday. I'll send you the link if you want it- it struck me as something that might interest you.

*goes back to studying maniacally*

I don't agree that a theory is absolutely true or absolutely false, even if it refers to the ultimate truth. Because ultimate truth is probably much more complex than any of that. I would go so far as to say that a human being cannot comprehend ultimate truth for longer than a fraction of a moment. And so most of this is philosophical. Even faith is mostly an observation in itself. Well, my brain is a pretzel trying to think about this, which just illustrates my whole point.

And the religious people don't have the completely wrong idea. They just take the idea and act it out wrong. *is judgemental*
