one reason i'm glad to be on a department fellowship is that they take out state and federal for me, whereas those on some dean's fellowship get the full amount and inevitably have to calculate their own taxes come this time of the year. I was talking to a PhD student friend of mine in mich and she was complaining because she had like income in 2-3 different states and some of it was fellowship type deals so it was complicated, not much like your situation.
