So, I feel a much longer entry coming on... but no time for it yet. In the meantime, I offer up this picture from Saturday's overturn-proposition-8 rally at City Hall here in NYC:
Thanks! You should have seen Dr. J's shirt - she had this shirt made. It's pink, with a rainbow decal on it that says "I [heart] Dumbledore". It was a big hit. (And how can you go wrong with Pat Benatar, really?)
There is something very empowering about public demonstrations, especially when so many people show up - there were about 4,000 people at this rally! Poor Dr. J got a bit claustrophobic. But it was amazing - everyone was so earnest, and friendly, and it just feels good sometimes to be around people as passionate as you are. Plus, the signs were highly entertaining; I think my favorite was "Fabulous is now furious," with a large drag queen head drawn on it.
You're doing better than I am with the substantive entries (not that I wouldn't always encourage more). Unless you're going to count "a picture is worth a thousand words", which I'm banking on. *grin*
Thanks! :) It wasn't a pride parade, but rather a protest that was distinctly reminiscent of a pride parade (although, admittedly, when I went to pride this past summer, it was definitely a more light-hearted, publicly-inebriated affair than the protest). We were protesting for gay rights in general and specifically protesting California's passing Proposition 8.
I'm frankly more excited by Man With Hat. Sure, your symbolic act is important, despite the fact that you're not in California. And you are to be commended.
But! Man With Hat! God I love New York. If photos from the 1920s are any indication, banging hats may make a comeback, along with gangsters, and unemployment lines.
I can't really argue with you about the awesomeness of the Hat. Nor, considering the state of the economy, could I really argue about the "comeback" of the unemployment lines. If only the gangsters would again start dressing in pinstripes and fedoras; it would be a prettier world, at any rate. *grin* Hey, if you come visit me, I'll buy you your very own East Village fedora and you, too, can be Man With Hat.
No, seriously, dude, the protests were about needing a national movement for recognizing the unconstitutionality of these types of propositions! I mean, the one in Arkansas was certainly worse than the one in CA, even if Prop 8 gets to be the iconic one. And symbols are important! I mean, what else are we artists for, if not to exploit the power of symbols?
