Three times in the past two years, I've approached by attractive females directly as a result of my reading Harry Potter in public. They were, of course, not surprised to learn that I was gay (because *straight* guys would never be caught reading HP in public), but two of them turned out to be hardcore slashers, so at least we had lots to talk about. The third one was one of those diehard "omigodHarrybelongswithHermionethatliketotallyrocksandallotherpairingsarejustwrongandslashislikegagmewithmyPradashoes" types.
Now, if I could just figure out a way to use HP as a way of attracting the attention of gay men, *that* would be fantastic....
I have never cared what people thought about my reading list, so I suppose I am not quite the right target for your question. But I am very straight, and read all sorts of books in the ilk of HP/LoTR in public, and have never had any problems meeting women while doing so. Sometimes it is even a great conversation starter.
