I just re-read the HP series in preparation for HBP...

So why do so many of the adult male wizards have "us" names?

Albus...
Sirius...
Remus...
Rubeus...
Cornelius...
Lucius...
Mundungus...
Dedalus...
Severus...
Tiberius...
Regulus...
Rodolphus...
Argus...

Hmmm.

Lots of Latin men's names (techically, second declension masculine nouns) ended with -us and hence it has stuck throughout European language development over the centuries. Possibly.

I was going to say a deliberate choice to use Latinate names rather than Anglo-Saxon for the pure-bloods to differentiate them from the muggle-borns. This works better for the snobbish purebloods though (nothing Latinate about Ron, afaik. Or James, for that matter).
