Gah, ok just looked up trains to see how easy it would  be to go to sheffield on an adventure. Answer: not very.
Worst case 5 bloody changes! Best 3, but there doesn't seem to any avoiding the london underground at all without much faffery and time wasting trying to get across london without it.

well ok...maybe the *whole* thing doesn't need to sink, just a strip through hehe. yeah, i really can't imagine having to contend with it on a daily basis but i guess you adapt after awhile.

Could you not take a west-coast Virgin train to Crewe, change for Manchester, then change for Sheffield? It might take a bit longer but it would cut out the underground, and you'd be crossing the country at it's narrowest point instead of its widest. I did that journey ages ago and it was manageable though I can't remember eactly how long it took, and the Manchester to Sheffield trip had lovely scenery. You might even get a direct train to Manchester.

ah yeah thats a good journey, sadly though i'd be going from eastbourne not exeter. As i'm still stuck in this place, and that means london's directly in my way. so unless i go all the way around it in a loop i sort of have to go through it:(.
