The Power of Love

The moment Yunho leaned in to kiss Jaejoong for the first time, a rookie skydiver jumped out of at plane at 10,000 feet, screaming in exhilaration and insane fear.

The instant Yunho’s lips reached Jaejoong’s, a dolphin leapt out of the ocean somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, body gleaming in the summer sunlight, surely better to hear the shrieks of delight from dozens of children’s throats, who were hanging over the rail of the cruiser he was chasing.

The second Jaejoong parted his lips and deepened the kiss, a 26 year-old art teacher whose left leg had been amputated from the knee down due to a childhood car accident began to cry as her boyfriend of two years knelt down in front of her wheelchair and proposed to her, to the backdrop of the Le Bois park in Paris at sunset.

And when Yunho groaned and reached forward to gather Jaejoong closer, closer, closer, somewhere in the universe a new galaxy exploded into being, and new colors no language on Earth could possibly describe glided through the blackness of space that was no longer black.

Jaejoong twined his arms around Yunho’s body and kissed him back with all the emotions he had, had ever had, and would forever continue to have, and dictators were overthrown, Atlantis was found, and for an instant, not a single child in the world was hungry. If the galaxy had a throat it would have laughed in simple joy at its own existence, and as it was, right at that moment, everything everywhere was perfect.

And then the kiss ended.

And Yunho was staring at Jaejoong, and Jaejoong was staring at Yunho, and each was thinking that the other’s eyes were the last thing they wanted to see before they died.

“That was nice,” Yunho whispered.

“Nice,” Jaejoong whispered back.

“Nice,” Yunho whispered again, even softer this time.

“Nice,” Jaejoong repeated. He seemed to have misplaced his vocabulary somewhere, and was now relying on Yunho to supply him with one, but Yunho wasn’t being very helpful.

The door to their hotel room banged open, and Changmin stood in the entrance, looking wild-eyed. “Are you guys okay?” he yelled.

“Okay?” asked Yunho.

“There was just an earthquake! Didn’t you guys feel it?! Thank God it was just a little one, I don’t think anyone was hurt!”

“Earthquake?” Maybe Yuhno had misplaced his vocabulary too.

Changmin was looking at the two of them oddly. Abruptly, he seemed to realize something, and immediately reached forward to pull the door shut. “ I’ll just go check on Junsu and Yoo-”the door slammed before he finished.

Jaejoong and Yunho went back to staring at each other. Jaejoong had a question he really wanted to ask, but Yunho beat him to it.

“ You don’t think we…?”

But once spoken aloud like that, even unfinished, it was so absurd, for how could any human have an effect on something like an earthquake? Still unable to keep his eyes away from Yunho’s, Jaejoong began to laugh the laugh of a man preparing to do something very foolish and perhaps dangerous, but who just doesn’t care anymore. And then Yunho began to laugh as well, and Jaejoong thought that once in his childhood he had dreamed about a laugh that sounded like that, and had woken up to the first snow of the year, and school had been cancelled and his father had been unable to go to work. The family had spent the day inside in front of the fireplace, wrapped in blankets, watching the snow fall outside the window, telling stories. And Jaejoong kept trying to remember that laugh, but it wouldn’t come back. But now it had. Just in time, and Jaejoong would never forget it again.
