The characters Asari and Shoui, from the manga Ze by Shimizu Yuki are my favourite BL pairing. This is because of the complex relationship of these characters. Asari is a kami and Shoui is his kotodama master. Originally I adored this pairing because of Asari's cheekiness and with Shoui, well I must admit, I am a sucker for a stern looking guy with glass. They play cat and mouse with each other when we first meet them in volume one. However, little did we know the extent of their complex relationship until volume 8 and 9.
Asari use to be Shoui's grandfather's kami, Rikiichi. However Rikiichi died in the process of saving Shoui, who was then a baby, from Shoui's own father. As a result, Asari blamed Shoui for the death of Rikiichi. Shoui, a then young boy, was unaware of his real father's action. After the death of Rikiichi and his father, he was adopted as the son of his uncle. Asari was then made Shoui's kami, however he resented Shoui. After a near death incident with Shoui, Asari promised to be Shoui's kami as long as he grew into a fine young man.
Many years later, now an adult, Shoui and Asari's relationship is still rather strained due to their past history. However now, Asari's feelings towards Shoui had changed. He truly loved Shoui, but that realisation came when Asari was no longer able to heal Shoui. Soon, Asari 'disappeared' or returned to Hakushi (paper).
Shoui, devastated by the loss of Asari, demanded that Waki, the puppet maker, to 'bring Asari back to life'. However, by recreating Asari, his former memories are not retained. But despite of this, Shoui was able to recall Asari back to the world. Asari's memories soon regained his memories as he had not forgotten his promise, from long ago, to Shoui, to return to him. This act in itself defied Waki's understanding of kamis who are brought back to life did not retain their memories.
Asari and Shoui are my favourite characters because:
1) Despite their shaky start and against all odds, they were able to find their way back to each other again. Although Asari had returned to Hakushi (paper) and had the opportunity to rejoin Rikiichi, all he wanted to do was to return back to Shoui's side. His hate for Shoui when they first met had changed to love.
2) Although Shoui knew Asari hated him at first, he did everything he could to become a man Asari could be proud of.
3) I adore Shoui because of his determination and not wanting to hurt Asari by using his powers. He wanted to protect him but in the end hurt him by his actions.
For this, I love this pairing and it is the reason why they are my favourite pairing.
I rather confusing and convoluted explanation, but hopefully it made some sense ^^;;;
