Cancer

So my Uncle Irv has the cancer. He had bladder cancer that got treated last year. At the end of January he was catscanned and all clean. On Thursday they found he's got cancer throughout his body, from brain to intestines, at least. Five weeks from nothin' visible to everywhere. Don't know yet if they'll have any course of action. It'll probably be a prolonging move, not a curing one, if they do.

I went to see him yesterday. He was lying down on the bed in his room, and had an IV, but something struck me as strange. It took me a minute to figure out what it was: He was in street clothes. Just wearing jeans & a t-shirt instead of the standard issue Draft-O-Matic hospital gown.

He's dopey from the morphine, but he's still about as Uncle Irvy as you can get. He's just a really great guy. I talked to him for probably half an hour or more, with him drifting in and out of awakeness.

We've got a lot of cancer goin' on in my family. My mom had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, from which she has been in remission for years as a result of her chemo. My dad's sister died of cancer, and Irv is one of Dad's brothers.

I'll probably go back down on Tuesday to see Irv again.
