in all honesty, the only way that Pete and Pete affected my music taste was that now I listen to Dan's band Jounce. lol. good luck on your paper!

Pete and Pete was interesting for me in that in spite of watching it as a kid, I didn't really get into the music from it until I revisited it as a teenager. But it definitely defined a genre that I don't even have words for now, except that it's an instant bit of nostalgia.

I doubt that my comment was helpful in pretty much any way, but I wish you luck all the same. :)

I was in HS when it was on and totally into it. I saved up boxtops from Frosted Mini Wheats (or something) and sent away for a tape (yes, a tape!) with music from the show. I was just starting to get into good music then (ie early REM was my big discovery in HS). I definitely think getting that tape helped me discover different stuff. You have to remember back then in the early 90s finding indie music or alternative music was really hard. You had to listen to college radio or seek it out, it wasn't just on the internet every where you looked. I got into college radio in 95 and then became the music director of my college's station in 96-97. I hadn't really thought of it, but I guess my exposure to music via P&P was helpful in defining my taste a bit.

I was already listening to alternative music when I discovered Pete & Pete. It was actually the music that helped inspire me to pay attention to the show. So it's music didn't change my tastes, but my tastes changed what I watched!

I'm 28 now, so I guess I was watching when I was between 11-14 years old? I definitely was affected by the use of music in the show. It did plant the seed of appreciation for indie type music in my head as a wee one, but I think I was more interested in the importance that was bestowed on the music. It seemed like it was very important to each of the characters individually and as a community - it was something that brought them together and helped them understand each other as well as helped them deal with what they were feeling. It was cool knowing that music wasn't just important to me ( ... )
