I've been wanting to see a total solar eclipse since I was knee-high to a colorful expression. When I was a wee lad I had an astronomy book, and a total solar eclipse was among the cool things I wanted to see. My mom arranged for us to stay for 4 nights at a nifty place just outside of Carbondale months ago before the hype started. With all the noise in the media I expected the whole population of Chicago to descend on Carbondale. I was so worried about the traffic that I probably would have stayed home if we hadn't already had arrangements (that included a place to stay until Tuesday). I'm glad I got to see it, even though it wasn't quite the transcendent experience it was for some people. I had seen one before, but I was, as you say, knee high to a colorful expression -- I believe it was 1971.

I'd decided well ahead of time that totality was short to spend any of it fiddling with cameras -- if I want pictures I can look at other people's. I brought my real camera, but it wasn't working, so I got some phone pictures of the dapples after totality.
