Fanmix: Another Vision of Us

As a provider of a great deal of fluff for this pairing, I thought I’d take a bit of a break, and embark on a little exercise in masochism. Though I absolutely love sending the boys off on various happily-ever-afters, the plain fact is that the chances of these two extremely different people achieving that good an outcome is beyond slim. So, in song-form, here are some ways it could go wrong, or never happen at all.

“You Make Me Angry” by Hera
They never quite manage to develop anything more than the violent, paranoid teacher-confused, discouraged student relationship.
Frustrated, I’m inflated and you’re bringing it on.
I’m full of steam, and in my mind I’m beating you up.
You make me angry,
you push my buttons like you’re playing a game.
Or are you hungry?
Are you hungry to see me crying, crawl away in shame?

“Ever Fallen in Love?” by The Buzzcocks
Or, Peter does recognize his own feelings, but just can’t risk showing them.
You spurn my natural emotions,
you make me feel like dirt
and I’m hurt.
And if I start a commotion,
I run the risk of losing you,
and that’s worse.

“It’s Beginning to Get to Me” by Snow Patrol
Or Peter does take the risk, and they make a go of it. But Claude’s issues keep him firmly locked out.
And it's beginning to get to me-
that I know more of the stars and sea
than I do of what's in your head,
barely touching in our cold bed.
Are you beginning to get my point?
That all this fighting with aching joints
is doing nothing but tire us out.
No one knows what this fight's about.

“This is Such a Pity” by Weezer
Second verse, same as the first- they give it a try, but, as per the basis of their relationship, all they do is fight.
I know how to pick on you,
you push me over the edge.
We cause so much agony.
We can’t seem to move ahead.

“World of Two” by CAKE
To be honest, Peter always struck me as able to be more in love with being in love than the person he’s actually with. To the detriment of Claude’s fragile sense of self-worth.
I don’t want to
hear you whisper.
I don’t want to
orbit your world of two.
There’s only room for you
in your world of two.

“Street Map” by Athlete
Back to the pseudo-happy land of “they never get together at all”- Claude always means to go back to Peter. Someday. He’s worked it all out. But somehow, he never... actually... makes it.
I would like someone to make a map,
mark my home and draw some lines that match
all of the reasons why it can be like you said.
One day, it's gonna happen.
I don't know when, I'll be on your street.
But I know one day, it's gonna happen.
You're gonna be swept off your feet.

“Leaving So Soon?” by Keane
Or, Claude does come back... during the five minutes of Peter’s entire life where he is unforgiving.
Now you're here-
I bet you're wishing you could disappear.
I'm trying to be kind,
I get the feeling you're just killing time.
You look down on me, don't you look down on me now.
You don't know me at all.
A slap in the face, in the face for you now
just might do now.

“Challengers” by The New Pornographers
Or, for all the perfectly logical, sensible reasons, though their lives keep intertwining, they never let the spark that’s always between them catch.
On the walls of the day,
in the shade of the sun, we wrote down
another vision of us.
We were the challengers of the unknown.
“Be safe,” you say,
“Whatever the mess you are, you mind?” “Okay.”
That is the custom on down.
