Haiti is another country who's history I have studied greatly. A very sad story. From day one of the second republic in this hemisphere, the first republic (the USA, of course) attempted to overthrow their government and reinstall French Imperial control (can't have, you know, black people running their own democracy when we had slaves here) Though direct invasions and other various interferences since then by the US, the nation is extremely poor and unstable. The poorest nation in this hemisphere, I believe. I can't even imagine what it must be like to live there :
Where'd you get this picture? I'm just wondering if its photoshopped. Look at the size of the tennis courts compared to the people walking on the street. I guess it's a really clever photoshop job, if it is one...
A few other nice pictures of the slums in Latin America.
One thing to note: In Venezuela, a MASSIVE government housing program is under way to build new affordable and good quality housing for the poor. Low interest government loans have also helped many of the poor be able to buy their own houses too, by the way, and move out of the shanty towns. It's a slow process, but it's a part of Chavez's decision to not take away the rich people's wealth (since he was first elected, they have gotten richer just like everyone else) , but to empower the poor people to be able to control their own destinies. That is his ultimate sin to the power elite in his own country and in this one.
