I've had four hours sleep, geeze. Joe's party was great fun. I saw Will, an old bandmate of Joe's who I have not seen in forever, and also Francis, a friend of Joe's from Greensboro who I met while I was spending time in that city a lot last year ( Read more... )

I'm judging my previous rant by what I've seen in three artistic educations ( ... )

With the "modern dance" that I was exposed to when I was dating Joyce, I saw an art form that did not exist at ALL outside the boundaries of formal education. No one can just say, "I'm going to be a "modern dancer", where is my shoes?". It doesn't work that way, and what I got out of the pieces I saw through Joyce, and the work she did with me, was that "modern dance" was mediocre, contrived, and elitist.Which is what Sam and I were speaking about Friday night at the party, and why I brought it up in the first place (I didn't know anyone else who had been exposed to it felt the same way, honestly). If art is subjective, how can you grade it the same as you grade Math? It's simply ridiculous, in my opinion, to even attempt to do so ( ... )

Man, I hate I didn't get this until just now. Let me know in advance when next you'll be in town and we'll get that coffee.

Wow, what a change from when I was going to school there. I remember him making me change classes after one incident where he wanted us to draw mountains and I used just a pen and one continues squiggly line to fill up the whole piece of paper. I guess I asked for it, I suppose, but even then I felt as if it was stupid to "teach" art in the manner that he was doing, let along to grade it.

See, that is ridiculous. I remember you having to go through all of that, actually. I thought then that they were saying that drawing was a more valid and important art form than photography.

You seem to be going about it as best you can, by the way. Teaching is a noble profession, it's just that our education system, art or otherwise, is entirely screwed up and based on competention, which I strongly disagree with.

I've heard that SSHS's art programs are much nicer now than when I was there. For instance, they didn't have theater back in the mid 90s. holy shit....now I feel old. Thanks.
