I picked up a collection of Fritz Leiber's work from the library. It included the short story "Ill Met in Lankhmar."

Then [Fafhrd] looked up at the Mouser with a broad, ingenuous smile.

Good copy editing means thinking about the author's intent, and how to realize it, rather than just imposing "grammar" or "logic" according to some system of rules. It's very hard to train people to edit that way, though.

You got that right. They really missed the point, and the charm, of the original.

It makes me wonder if the other FL short stories in the book are the originals or not, which is why I stopped reading the book.
