Asus is apparently coming out with something that's basically a tablet/iPad-oid eeepc, and it seems they're going to do a version with an e-ink greyscale screen. I'm waiting to see what it's like. (don't have link, lost it and my google fu failed.
Sounds like a good concept poorly executed. Which, sadly, is bloody typical of old publishing. It's almost like they're deliberately crippling it so they can go "Well, that didn't work. Back to selling dead trees!"
I'd prefer to read on a device larger than a touch, on the whole. However electronic paper devices are notoriously slow to refresh, and the visible in sunlight and long battery life features aren't much of a selling point for me. I'm unlikely to go more than 10 hours without access to the means to recharge a device.
I suspect I'll end up getting a touch at some stage. A $300 computer is quite compelling.
There's been a lot of comment on the library lists I read. It doesn't support Maori, and one of the people commenting on the list returned their one to Whitcoulls for this reason (it basically made it useless for his purposes). When he returned it the shop assistant said "Oh yeah, it doesn't support foreign languages."
