I tend to disagree - I wasn't, for example. Not that I'm going to complain about extra reasons to party (especially when I'm invited) or make kids happy, but I do have trouble with understanding the whys and wherefores - unless Peter, or Jen, or a godparent, or, which I forgot in my last comment (but is quite relevant), Kaia is a christian.
It has nothing to do with religion as such I suppose.
I was raised in Flanders which is mostly catholic, taught in catholic schools and even went to a catholic university. I'm not catholic or even christian by any definition but I'm fully aware I ooze and breathe catholic culture. It's just part of the fabric of what is 'me' and what Kaia is/will be. Even now she comes home from kindergarten saying 'Jesus is my best friend' because they sang some songs about Jesus around Christmas. 20 years from now she'll probably won't feel very christian at all, but meanwhile she'll be familiarized with all the stories, myths, customs and morals that go with it.
That's the reason why, in my eyes, baptism (and marriage/burial) isn't something hypocritical, but something that will make her life a tiny bit easier and more 'natural'. Being the only kid in class that doesn't go to mass or can come on bezinningsweekend (even if it's mostly about smuggeling booze in and smoking the grass for lack of anything else) must suck. :)
