Steve Irwin: "Thanks for caring mate."

I don't normally get on LJ and bark at anyone or anything in particular but what happened at uni yesterday at 3pm was an absolute disgrace and really pissed me off.

Some idiot (all I know is that she was female) in the SRC office got on the PA and said the following:

"Attention all students. News has just arrived that The Crocodile Hunter has died ( ( Read more... )

I think your right pete and i share your passion for steve...when i went to the US in 2002 I never realised how popular he was and thought to myself that he is more popular over there than what he is here...I think he has set an example for all of us that we should follow paths in our lives that we are passionate about and that is a big legacy for him and his family after all he followed on with his family's work. Steve to me was an icon for Australian lifestyle all that is good- wildlife, family, love, the waters, marine and business. It is a shame that he had to go but I suppose as Mel from Sunrise said "he showed us we are all mortal"... Australia will never be the same without this larrikin but seriously we can be proud of his work in conversation and use his memory to conserve our world. I am no greeny but his legacy for me is to look after the environment and like Blake says find faith within it...thats what Steve did ( ... )

It makes me wonder how anyone can be so absolutely heartless. Sounds like someone shouldn't be part of the SRC anymore...

That is absolutely disgusting. I'm not surprised because they always get on the PA and makes arses of themselves but that pushes it to a whole new level. At the end of the day, someone died. Whether that person is known worldwide or not, it is still a life that has ended and it needs to be respected.
Whoever did that announcement needs to be expelled from the SRC.

Hi Pete- I think this is an important thread that you have initiated and it is good to see that LiveJournal is becoming a forum where some consideration is being given to such issues. Thank you for daring to get this one off the ground. As you know from our class yesterday the topic raises a lot of thoughts about Australian identity, but essentially your sense of what was right in this situation needed to be said. Well done.

Good on you Pete! I wasn't there on Monday and did not hear the announcement, I take your word for it. What an idiot!! I think that girl should get back on the PA and make an apology.
