Very cool

So I spent the last hour or so bundled up in a million layers, sitting on my still-wet deck chair watching the eclipse.

Wow. That's really all I have to say.

The moon is all red now. Very, very cool but I wish I had left the city, I wish I had had someone else around who was interested to see & talk about it with and I wish I had a telescope....

I joined a club not long ago and they had eclipse-watching as an event today. I cycled up to Nose Hill with a foamy and a sleeping bag in my pack and, after some difficulty finding the rest of the group in the dark, camped out and watched the shadow shift. I ended up next to someone who had read Harry Potter recently and talked about how we liked Luna Lovegood as a character. I saw three shooting stars, three satellites, and a better view of the stars than I can usually get from the city. It was an unusual social occasion in that I came, hung out with people I'd never met, and left again without them gaining a clear idea of what I looked like (one of them, after I had pointed out a few constellations, started calling me "Starman," which made me think of the alien from the movie of that name). On the way back, only the top portions of the downtown buildings were visible over what looked like one of Sauron's black clouds out of Lord of the Rings. Partway back, I cycled through a little fog, but by the time I reached Crescent ( ... )
