“Are we friends?” He asked that hopeful look in his eyes once more.

Ennis stared at him for a moment knowing he might be making a big mistake but deciding he didn’t care any more. Then he smiled at him and nodded his head.

“Yeah Jack, always.”

Awww... at least they are back on "friends" term. I do wonder how the incident would affect Jack - now that he dealt with the threat face to face. He would certainly worry how this might affect Ennis as well...

Man... i wish they could be somewhere alone for a change.. .somewhere like the Brokeback for them.

I like your slow build up.

Don't worry eventually they will get some private moments. Maybe not quite as private as Brokeback but they'll make due.

Ok - i'm really worried. I'm not nearly as optimistic as Jack about how things are gonna go with Billy. Very scary. And I have a hard time imagining Barnes just leaving and that being the end of that. SO - Yikes. Very realistic.

I'm glad Ennis is realizing that he needs his friendship with Jack. They need it now more than ever. As always, I'm loving this story and looking forward to the next update. :)

I love this story. What a great scene and I love that Jack held his own and wasn't "rescued" but I also like that he learns that friends look out for each other and Ennis wants to be Jack's friend. And I love that Jack is surrounded by people who recognize some of his worth. Really a great, heart pounding chapter and a terrific story.

Thanks. I really wanted to show that Jack could handle himself if he had to because as the younger of the two it would be easy for Ennis to feel he has to protect him or coddle him and I want their relationship to be as equal as possible. That doesn't mean that there won't be times when they need a little help but I want it to be a two way street.

Thanks for the comments.

I liked that, too - that Jack fought back against the two other men. And good for Ennis for getting in there. I'm worried, too, what the future is going to hold.

Man I really can't add. LOL I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote 25 years. Oh well, thanks for catching that and the other three typos. Seems no matter how many times I re-read these chapters I alway miss something.

Thanks for the beta though and for continuing to read.

Excellent! Both the boys are learning - Ennis is learning that maybe it can be fixed because Jack is too important to him and he doesn't want to lose him altogether, and Jack is learning that there are things to be feared and that Ennis isn't completely wrong on that point. Billy, Barnes and Wheeler are still trouble - even if Barnes is supposedly gone. At least the boys are together - looks like they're going to need each other. Thanks for being such a frequent updater! Marie
