I have similar problems with American Sign Language; even if I know the signs for the words I want to say, I don't necessarily know the right order to put them in.
There's a guy who does maintenance at my workplace who's deaf, and today I was studying in the breakroom and he asked me if I was a college student. He started by writing notes because of course he had no way of knowing that I knew some sign language. When I answered him in ASL he started to sign back to me, but I wasn't getting it so I guess he decided it would be easier to write it out (which is probably true). We ended up having a very pleasant conversation, and I was impressed with myself because I managed to remember enough sign to hold up my end of the conversation. Although I cheated a little bit, like instead of signing out "University of South Dakota" (which I don't think I remember anyway) I just spelled out "USD". Whatever works.
