I think a lot of what love is, is sold to us. For guys, I think its that John Cusak character that leads you to believe that if you're sweet enough, you'll get the woman of your dreams. For women, its the princess mentality of needing a man to rescue you from whatever evils ail you.

So much of what we know of love is socially constructed. But that doesn't have to mean that there's no such thing as an all consuming love. I think that we just have lost track of what that is.

The statement that I intend to have needlepointed on my pillows someday is that "Love is learning to tolerate the smell of one another's farts."

In other words, love is simple. Love is tolerance. Love is getting along and compromising. Love is being friends. Love is being partners.

Whenever I feel the years princess brainwashing taking over, I always turn to Kahlil Gibran's passage on marriage from The Prophet:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore ( ... )

The real life lovers are busy being happy and keeping their mouths shut. They're not selling anything. They know that if they talked, it would sound like they were.

It exists, but it happens to almost no one. It's ridiculously rare, and it doesn't always look like you think it will look, but it is there. There is just enough of it around to drive the rest of us mad.
