As you may remember, I love Vallotton. (I don't think this was in the Met show in NYC that I went do just before lockdown.) He always makes me think of Podro's argument, in Depiction, that we attend to figurative art as a kind of oscillation of surface and depth, the two-dimensional depicting surface and the three dimensional scene being depicted.

I think he's tremendous, when at his best at least, and these woodcuts are surely among his best work.
