Filesharing & Guilt

I don't like filesharing. I recently subscribed to the emusic service which lets me download 40 songs per month for $9.99 and I feel guilty about that. I want to know that the artists get paid at least what they would get paid if I bought the CD ( Read more... )

i DO admit to having downloaded 'strange geometry', mostly because i was so pee-in-my-pants excited about how it would sound like. i now own it on vinyl and cd.
true, i download some stuff illegally, but it's nice to have the actual product in your hands; the liner notes and stuff. you know?
i hope you don't hate me! :(

I don't hate anyone who is too excited to wait for the record to come out! I just don't like the slow shift to a mentality where people don't feel guilty about downloading mp3s with no intent to buy, or an intent to buy, but no follow though, because they find mailordering to Sweden too difficult. Mailordering to Sweden is half the fun for me.

I don't like using itunes/emusic because I prefer to have the product in hand too - I have used filesharing networks though, to downloaded stuff that I already had on vinyl rather than making poor mp3s.

I also am a big fan of mixtapes, so the idea of downloading a mix cd (like that great indiepop compilation assembled by someone called rentboy?) with one song from a bunch of artists doesn't bother me. Maybe it is just that everyone has their own level of what's acceptable and I'm just a little conservative about these things.

I only download songs to see if an album is any good. I purchase records and cds based on them. And yes, sometimes I get too excited, as well, about new records such as Strange Geometry. But there's nothing compared to having the real thing in your hands.

Recently however, just like you, I've been downloading stuff that I have on vinyl since I'm too lazy to rip them all and put it into my iPod.
