I think that for the country as a whole, it's become a holiday. Not in the sense of Christmas or Easter or other holidays which involve a lot of family togetherness, holiday foods and festivities of that sort, but in the sense of New Years' Eve: a time for people to party, scream at the top of their lungs and drink heavily. Of course, there are plenty of National holidays that allegedly have meaning but don't get celebrated. Patriot's Day, anyone? (AKA 9/11)
So in conclusion: Super Bowl is a holiday, just not in the sense that many people think of holidays. More an excuse to get drunk and have fistfights with your friends, family and neighbors.
