Was having a conversation just now about the irony of naming a clothing store "Banana Republic", and how bizarre it is that more people aren't always chuckling every time they see it. I was likening it to naming your store "Child Labor" or "The Sweatshop". Then, on a whim, i hit google. And found this: Read more... )

Hmm, maybe "sweatshop" means something different in British english? I mean, opening up a store called "Fagshop" in England would be a wayyy different store than if it were in America. :-P

Actually, I recall reading a story a couple years ago when Nike had a deal going on where you could get a custom stitched lettering on a pair of Nike shoes. One guy ordered a pair with the word "Sweatshop" embroidered on them, but Nike refused to do it. The funny thing though is that Nike wouldn't tell them _why_ they wouldn't do it, they just refused. He kept on trying over and over again to get an explanation, but they never gave any actual reason. He claimed he just wanted to put the word on his shoes as a way of honoring the people who worked long and hard to produce the shoes for him. :)
