Can someone tell me why every time I go to look at my "friends" page, this little window pops up asking me for a username and password? I can just hit cancel and continue reading/commenting, so it doesn't see that I need to for LJ. But....any ideas about what it is?????????

it is because there is a place on the page to enter your name and password and your browser is trying to be helpful to you in filling it out. the best thing to do is just enter your info when you see it the first time - that way you'll be signed in and you will get to see all the friends-only posts. or else you can set your browser preferences to not give you that pop up window anymore.
