It's Hell getting old.
I have reached the point where even though I take precautions, I live a mess, and can no longer be sure I won't embarass myself without warning. Last Wednesday, then Saturday.
I don't want to live like this. I've lost Mary Page. I have nothing to live for any longer. -

Loving alone
I've been alone for over two months now, and if it hadn't been for Emily and Caroline's assistance, I don't think I could have gotten anything done. Bits lived nearer, and came more often, but a couple of weeks ago she bought a house in Charlottesville and had moved back, so Emily is nearer. As it turned out, "months at best" turned into "only days". Mary Page declined rapidly, and passed away last evening at 11:05 PM EDT. I''m spent today arranging things with the funeral director (no funeral per se, she is being cremated and a memorial service will be held next Tuesday at our church).
Now I really don't know what I'm going to do. -

Writer's Block: Just Say No!
I guess the only bad habit I ever broke was smoking. On the day of the Surgeon General's Report in 1964, I decided to quit smoking cigarettes and bought a pipe (still bad, of course). I smoked a pipe off and on until 1974, when I just kind of stopped, as keeping pipes going is a lot of work. I'd spent a lot of money on them, and I never liked ( Read more... ) -
Do you believe in any superstitions?
I don't think I do. When I was young, I used to avoid walking under ladders, but that's common sense, most of the time (if someone is up there and drops something on you, anyway). I pass the salt by putting it down on the table, and I never give a gift of a knife (because it might cut the friendship). But I have violated all of those rules, on ( Read more... ) -

My favorite quote thus far has been, "Lord Arhys, how long have you been dead?", from Paladin of Souls, by Lois McMaster Bujold.
That was a superb novel, by the way, although written in the fantasy genre and itself as a sequel to The Curse of Chalion, another superb novel, in my humble opinion. -
Alma Mater
My college education was at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. I get a periodic mailing of the school's alumni magazine. I scan it--the school has changed so much since I went there, I can't even tell where on campus thing are any more. Anyway, I always look at the class news and the obituaries just to see if I know anyone, and was amazed ( Read more... )
