I got my glasses from ZenniOptical.com today and decided to review them. Be warned, this is image heavy!
A friend showed me this website YEARS ago, and I've been thinking about ordering something from them ever since. Well, now that I'm uninsured and my old glasses - a full frim metal frame made by Jeep - have broken, I thought it would be a good time to try out Zenni. I have yet to read a bad review about them, and this definately will not be a bad one. I am very pleased with the quality of my glasses, the shipping time, and the COST! You can't beat less than ten bucks for prescription frames with anti scratch coating!
I was rather weary before ordering. My prescription is new to me, it's stronger, so I was afraid that it may be too harsh on my eyes or that it would look strange, distorted, etc. but they look and feel fine. I can definately tell that the prescription is stronger, in the sense that I can relax my eyes. My optometrist tried to warn me that if I order glasses from a website, that the lenses might be messed up, but was more than willing to give me my FULL prescription. Here's the thing about eyeglass prescriptions. They include this thing called pupillary distance. Pupillary distance, or PD for short, is the distance between the center of your two pupils. Ever used binoculars? You know how you have to twist the lenses until things are in focus? Part of that is adjusting them to your PD. If the PD in an eyeglass lens is incorrect, they will not work as intended. Unfortunately, many optometrists will conveniently 'forget' to leave the PD off of an eyeglass prescription, OR, they will outright refuse to give it to you! Folks, if your optometrist or ANYONE else in the medical field tries to withhold your PD number from you, it is ILLEGAL. This is your medical information and you have every right to obtain it. Some offices will try to keep you from getting your PD so that you can ONLY order glasses from them. It's an unethical and shady thing to do, and I would promptly stop seeing any optometrist who tried to withhold my PD from me. I say all of this because have seen a few other Zenni reviews where the writer had to measure their own PD because their doctor would not give it to them.
Now that we have all of that out of the way, here are the glasses I ordered. One is a black plastic full rim frame with the $4 anti scratch coating on it, and the other is a metal half-rim frame with no extras. I know a few folks who don't like plastic frames, but let me tell you. I live in central Florida. It is hot and unbearably humid most days of the year. My old frames made by Jeep? Started to CORRODE, and would leave a nasty, green residue on my temples and the bridge of my nose. It stained my skin and was just, goopy and nasty. They would also get very very hot in the sun, to the point where I'd have to remove them. This is why I'm looking forward to plastic glasses. I hope that by using plastic, I can avoid the corrosion and heat problems that my old metal frames gave me. Anyway, on to the pictures!
The glasses arrive in their own case with a microfiber cleaning cloth wrapped around them. It's been folded to showcase the website's address, which I thought was a little cute. :)
The cases are cheap, but still useable and definately better than nothing. They're made of thin plastic with a simple snap closure and they seem to stay closed when jostled around, so I'd say they're suitable to toss into a purse and go.
The first pair is the metal half rim frame. It's
frame 4647 in silver. These have nothing extra added to them. They're nice! They are quite light and feel delicate, but stay on my face well. I was also able to adjust them without a problem!
I had a hard time finding a review online that showed the glasses near something for a good size reference, so I'm including pictures with the frames next to a computer mouse and a pen. Hopefully this gives people a decent idea about their size.
Here's my second pair. They're
frame 2285 in black, with the anti reflection coating added. I had to adjust these frames because I, unfortunately, have uneven ears! I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to adjust them enough, but thankfully, adjusting plastic frames at the hinge is no problem. There are several videos floating around online on how to do this. I chose a narrow, angular frame with thick lines because I have a soft, round face. Regardless of what style glasses you may choose, make sure they're close in size to any current glasses you have, so you don't end up with frames that are way too huge or small for your face.
I honestly have not noticed a difference between the frames with and without the anti reflection coating. I'm sure it will become more obvious as I use the two.
Again, with some common items for size reference. These frames are not as thick and imposing as I thought they might be, which is a good thing!
I was a bit wary of the fact that they are a full millimeter shorter in total width than my old glasses, but I honestly can't tell the difference.
Old frames are on the right. As you can hopefully tell, I tried to keep my Zenni glasses close in size to my old ones.
The half rims next to my old glasses. Again, stayed within the same size.
All 3 together, with my old glasses in the middle! One thing you can do to better judge the size of your Zenni glasses is to first measure your current glasses. Write down these measurements, and trace your glasses onto a piece of paper. Then, for every pair of Zenni glasses you are considering, mark those measurements over the glasses you traced, so you can get a feel for how much bigger or smaller they might be. This helped me eliminate a few frames when I was trying to decide on just two.
Overall, I am incredibly pleased! You can't beat glasses for $8. I will absolutely be ordering more, and my mother will probably order some too! I will be getting some prescription sunglasses and maybe some colored frames next :D I'm sure I will do another review when that happens! I would definately recommend Zenni to a friend, or even a stranger, and I reccomend them to everyone who reads this review! Zenni Optical is fantastic!
