I know all those places. Have you ever heard them play the organ in Grace? It's something else. It's a very large organ and echoes around in there wonderfully. One chilly night I went to a showing of the 1923 Lon Chaney Sr. silent movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It was so chilly that there was fog in the church; we were all bundled up in ski jackets and everybody kept their woll hats and hoods on - we could see our breaths. They had folding chairs arranged in the nave for about 500 people and John Fenstermaker played the music for the film on the cathedral organ and carillon. The projector was in the choir loft above the front door, and the screen was half way up the nave with the organist right behind it. It was spectacular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7boNOrs-v4g&feature=fvw
That is AWESOME--I would love to see an old movie in Grace Cathedral! The only large organ I have heard is the one in St. Mary's cathedral many years ago. I miss the City like I never did all the years I grew up and then raised my kids in the Bay Area. Now I just want to go back and I would do all of those simple, wonderful things like I did as a kid! Do they still do that type of thing? I'll come down to see it--meet you there!
I suppose they do. The Hunchback must have been in the 70s sometime. Just last August though, I went into SF to Union Square and they had an outdoor showing of "On the Waterfront". I did some entries about it. I wound up going alone because everybody I asked was busy. I drove to North Berkeley and then BARTed into the Powell Station and walked over to Union Square. Another chilly night, but it was glorious.
There is this program called FILM NIGHT IN THE PARK that puts up these big inflatable screens and a fabulous sound system. They show classics, and fairly new films too, like "The Dark Knight", that Batman film, and "Slumdog Millionaire" in the various parks in the city and in Marin and elsewhere. They have an outdoor film about once a week, but they might be scattered all over the bay area, only some of them are in SF
