Cynical? Not at all. I would call that a fair and logical assessment of events. The dirt's been there the whole time, it's just been a question of when to make the mud pies.
Obama comes off clean AND probably gets to see Candidate #1, whoever that is, in the Senate (I put it at 50/50, because Blago may try to appoint C1, who would then be "tainted" by association and possibly forced to decline). Bonus for the state of IL, Blago goes away, maybe CTA gets some damn funding. I'm not seeing the downside, but maybe I'm an optimist.
Oooh! Oooh! I'm cynical, and I think you're likely right. Do I get extra cynicism points for believing that the federal prosecutors who were working on Blago were also getting pressure to get this all going before the holidays and the inauguration because Obama doesn't want Blago hanging over his head as president, either in terms of the Chicago association that already has some people claiming Obama's presidency may be tainted, or in the sense of having a Governor breathing down his neck and demanding hometown favors?
Only if i get extra cynicism points for suggesting that Barack and Rahm had the goods before the election and held off until afterwards to avoid the impact on Obama's campaign.
I don't think that's cynical at all. But Obama & Rahm knew that there was a shitstorm of corruption stuff around Blago, so they weren't inclined to play ball with him about anything.
Also, let's laugh for a moment at Blago's BIG THREAT: "I'll appoint the worst person I can think of - myself."
