1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
broke up with somebody, bought my own car, started antidepressants, got my first freelancing gig, graduated college, took a cat on a 12-hour drive, got hit on by craig d. lindsey, saw the silver jews/magnolia electric co/destroyer/nomo/raconteurs/PYGMALION
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
i don't make resolutions, although i may get around to doing stuff i foolishly thought i'd have the time and motivation to do after i moved back to raleigh (exercise sometimes, write every day, try drawing every day, schmooze more freelancing opportunities, sleep a lot)
3. Did someone close to you give birth?
my cousin sara had a baby a few weeks ago
4. Did anyone close to you die?
no
5. What countries did you visit?
canada, various locales around the US
6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
more writing gigs, getting into the local music scene, making more of my own clothes, the time, equipment, and focus to record music
7. What dates from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
january 31 (official last day of daily editorship), august 13 (the day i left ann arbor and shaun)
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
not killing myself or others, dealing with shit, chilling out a little
9. What was your biggest failure?
hmm...i guess i failed to not go nuts for a while. still, i wish i'd kept in better touch with ian and andrew. okay, resolution: call or write amy, ian, andrew, forest, anshu, alaina, mike nickens, carol, lauren, kaenzig, chester.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
besides brain-sick, not really, except for a concussion/hangover and a nasty 24-hour vomit bug
11. What was the best thing you bought?
MY FLY HOOPTY. seriously, the driver's side door is held on with duct tape, the grill is missing, the hood is kinda crumpled and doesn't close all the way, it only has 2 seats (it's a minivan), and the windshield/roof intersection point leaks all over the steering wheel when it rains.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
michelle's, my dad's, cindy's (my first therapist) and Marian's (my second therapist)
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
shaun's, my dad's, the university of michigan's administration in general, my health insurance company's, my current therapist
14. Where did most of your money go?
room/board, the car...since moving back here, i've spent way more on albums and gas than anything else.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
my gig at cvnc, talking to grayson about the indy (need to get on that...), moving, possibly getting a full-time position at DENR, visiting philly and seeing bob dylan

k-hole by the silver jews, margaret vs pauline by neko case, pile of gold by the blow...there are more.

i. happier or sadder? less troubled

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
writing, making friends, not neglecting my ann arbor friends when i was still there, planning for internships and stuff

crap, dealing with an emotional cripple's bullshit, freaking out

i spent it in canada.

i believe i realized that i had really fallen out of it sometime around jan '06.

shaun in some ways, but i think that's it

hmmm...i think geek love by katherine dunn
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
easing myself into free jazz instead of jumping in cold like i did last time, roots music
28. What did you want and get?
i wanted and got a breakup in probably the least messy way possible, although it was seriously drawn out and agonizing towards the end; i graduated college; i got a semi-ok job in raleigh
29. What did you want and not get?
i wanted an internship and more freelancing opps, but i'm pretty much the only person to blame for that. and some new raleigh friends would have been nice, but eh.
30. Favorite film of this year?
uhhhhh i only saw three in the theater (i think), and they were the notorious betty page, an inconvenient truth, and the u.s. vs. john lennon
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
ummm...i seriously don't even remember.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
getting some action, getting more stuff published
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?
target+h&m+thrift stuff
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
um, none? although al gore was pretty cool
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
macaca, OTC morning-after pill, midterm elections, the resignation of rumsfeld (that was one great week)

ian, michelle and lekha, amy, the studio, certain daily kids, cool record store employees from ann arbor
38. Who was the best new person you met?
hmmm...i didn't meet a ton of people this year, but i really started hanging out and connecting with amy, and it was awesome because she's a badass
