shocking

Every goddamned thing in the newspaper these days is "shocking". Can't they afford to buy a new adjective (from China, at least)?

Andy Capp

Beware that Andy Capp is set in northern England.

There is also the dramatic remedy that workers can ... quit! What are their turnover numbers? Do other factories raid them for workers?

More disturbingly, I read recently that in Shanghai, most of the migrant workers don't have official residence permission in the city. That sounds like a technicality, but it means that they have no claim to welfare benefits, public schooling for their children, or use of the supposedly socialist medical system. I suspect things are the same in other cities.

But since this is an abuse by government, the Guardian is not likely to report on it.
