The Big Sleep of the Big Lebowski

Watched The Big Sleep the other night after hearing the Coen brothers discuss in a featurette the homage/rip-off of it in The Big Lebowski.

Both feature a mystery started by a wealthy man in a wheelchair, and a ridiculously complicated plot, making both films more about dialogue and how the characters interact with each other, rather than the story ( Read more... )

I always had a feeling in the back of my mind that The Big Lebowski was meant as a send-up of those old mystery/crime stories, like The Big Sleep or The Maltese Falcon. It's nice to know that was, in fact, the case.

Now I'll have to see if I can find the email of an old friend of mine who liked trying to crack codes like the one in those pics. Interesting!

Why does "Marlowe" ring a bell? Is it said in the Big Lebowski somewhere?

"SALTER" rhymes with "WALTER". Other than that, no clue.
