It was dark. Dark and quiet. Night time on Atlantis.

Everything he wanted was there for him to explore. Ancient writing, Ancient technology, the home of the Ancients, answers to all the questions he’d been collecting since he descended.

Daniel Jackson couldn’t bring himself to go back inside though. Vala had scampered off in search of “souvenirs”, leaving him out here, on a hidden balcony, where he couldn’t be seen easily, where he could hide and try to reconcile his emotions.

He was angry, hurt, confused. To come all this way, to get this far and they still refused to interfere, to step in against the Ori. He was forced to admit that he had believed they would…that eventually they would see what was coming and realize it was a fight that wouldn’t be won without the aid of the Ancients.

He sighed and hung his head.

“Dr. Jackson?”

He looked up, surprised. “Elizabeth.”

“May I join you?”

Daniel stood upright and shrugged. “I’m afraid I’m not very good company right now.”

She nodded and came closer anyway. “So Vala told me.”

Daniel rolled his eyes. “Yes, well, I’m afraid she and I have differing priorities when it comes to our time here in Atlantis.”

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow as she leaned back against the railing. “Hers is apparently thievery. What’s yours?”

Daniel sighed and crossed his arms. “What did she get into?”

“She was found rummaging through an equipment locker.” Elizabeth looked amused. “Right now she’s with Ronon, trying to convince him that she’ll split her take with him.”

Daniel closed his eyes. “That’s Vala.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Hmm?” Daniel looked up, surprised. “Oh, that…well…I’m not sure anymore.” He sighed and bent forward, leaning over the railing to peer into the surging waters below. “I’ve tried so hard to get here, and now that I am here…” He shook his head.

“You have more experience with Ancients than I do, but I’m not sure what you were expecting from them.”

Daniel chuckled. “Me either. When I realized that was no hologram, I guess a part of me jumped from that to…unrealistic expectations.” He looked at her. “Jack was always bothered by my willingness to believe the best of others. I thought I’d lost it over the years. I guess it’s still a part of who I am.”

“I wouldn’t be too quick to let that part of yourself go.” Elizabeth said, standing back up. “General O’Neill may have been bothered by it on missions, but he admires it about you too. So do I.”

Daniel stood too, crossing his arms again and looking at her. “Oh?”

She smiled and nodded. “He’d never tell you himself, of course.”

“Of course.”

She touched his arm and smiled. “There’s coffee, and I’ve got a lab set up for you with some material we thought you’d like to review while you’re here.”

He sighed and nodded. “Might as well make use of the time I’m here.”

“Might as well.”

He followed her back toward the door, then stopped her. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For reminding me.” Maybe it wasn’t what he’d hoped for…but there was still a whole lot of Atlantis that he had yet to explore…and very little time left to do it.
