Goddamnit.... I didn't know the doors opened that early. I got there at 8, and was a little puzzled why QOTSA seemed liek they were playing first.
I fucking love Death From Above 1979, and knowing that I missed them just stings me.
Still... yeah... amazing show.
The lighting on Love is Not Enough.... with the line creeping across the psyclorama while the fragmented led display panels started to "bleed" was, from a technical standpoint, an astounding piece of technical artistry, because I know the timing and programming involved in that alone was superb.
Seeing that setlist laid out like that really makes it seem a lot longer than it felt.
I was totally floored to hear "Burn" being played... I never thought Trent would choose that song for live performance ever again. And I love the variances they interspersed into the songs, like the alternate beginnings to Burn and Suck, or the sudden breakdown in the middle of CLoser that segued into the synth harmony from The Only Time.
Also, QOTSA was a poor match for that audience, methinks. The energy of a NIN show is not befitting of the laid-back approach Josh Homme brings with the Queens... They are better-suited for a Blues bar where one can sit back, relax, and just take in the pure sound of a raw emotional guitar... a guitar which, on the albums, is as soulful and introspective as any early Clapton material, but live, was totally lost in the muddy distortions of the amps they used. The only thing I really really liked was when, in "No One Knows", they took the bridge of the song, destroyed it, and then Josh just noodled on the guitar, leaving the QOTSA fans completely perplexed as to what the hell happened.
For serious.... they are great relaxing music (they are stoner rock, after all)... and even better for listening to in the car. Borrow or steal or even buy a copy of Songs for the Deaf... put in in your car on a pleasantly warm afternoon, roll down the windows, start driving with no direction or purpose, then crank the CD... the first track alone explodes in your face and makes you want to drive fast and recklessly.
Haha. I think even if someone despised NIN, it would change their minds after this show. That's how unbelieveable fucking amazing this goddamn show was. :B
