momento of ours

Are you falling in love right now?
Right now, at this moment, there is someone falling in love somewhere in the world.
This moment, that someone falls hard -- heart racing, fast breathing. Hard.
However right now, I’m on the bus. Not falling in love, but falling asleep. That someone is not me.
Everything’s the same today, again (surprise, surprise). The same mother with her whining son, the same old man who sits across from me tapping his cane, the same group of high school girls who giggle just too loudly behind me, the same -- wait, not the same.
Definitely not the same. More like new. He’s new. He walks down the aisle, and somehow chooses the empty seat next to me over all the other ones on the bus. After he sits down, he pulls out his cellphone and turns it off. Takes out his iTouch from his bag and drowns himself in music.
I wait for him to get off, curious about where exactly he’s going. But he doesn’t, not until the last stop. This is a bit exciting for me because I thought only I like to do this (that is, shut off my phone and ride the bus to the final stop).
Right now, at this moment, I do not have my iTouch. I feel naked, vulnerable - exposed to the outside world. I start to fidget, shifting myself every five seconds. I stand up to leave because I can’t stand it anymore, but he stops me. He presses me back into my seat and sticks a headphone into my ear.
He turns around to face me, serious but then a smile creeps onto his face. He scoots a bit closer, to ease the tension between the wires of the headphones.
We are not strangers anymore, especially not after a month of bus riding. Even though we never spoke a word to each other, we became each other’s companion for 75 minutes. Everyday for 75 minutes, if you add that all up, it’s…it’s a lot of time.
And when the music is just right, I guide his head onto my shoulder while I sink deeper into my seat.
So right now, at this moment, there is someone falling in love somewhere in the world.
Someone whose heart is racing along with fast breathing, who falls hard.
That someone is me.
