Well, I knew Jamie and Meg pretty damn well, despite all my prior interaction with them before last May was like, a single day at a convention years prior.
I also got to know another friend of mine very well over the net over the course of a few months while she was studying in NYC-when she got back, we started hanging out...didn't feel like much of a difference in terms of how well I knew her.
1) I had a friend I'd known online for about 6 years before I fell in love with him. We dated for just a little under 2 years before I broke it off for certain reasons not pertaining to the online part. But I knew him through and through before we met offline, so I say you can absolutely know a person before physically interacting with them. It just depends on the amount of time you know that person.
2) Well..if you KNOW it's going to fail, then yes it is insanity. But if you DON'T know it's going to fail, then no. Some things are worth the trial and risk.
