The needle, and the damage just begun

When I was little, I remember registering certain chunks of color as candy. There were green houses with pink trim and I would gnash my teeth as we drove by: "Ka-chunk. Peppermint!" The rippling color gradients on the cover of my mom's bargello books? Slurp, dude. Slurp. Mom's needlepoint projects happened while I acquired language and ate as much ( Read more... )

Honestly, it's kind of strange and sad to be done. I want to keep swimming. This is considered an intermediate pattern, but it was pretty easy, and completely relaxing.

I have more canvas, so off I go down the street to daydream about the next pattern while I walk. And ultimately, return with a chicken and greens for soup.

Very sweet of you to say. Always happy to provide a new way to see color.

This is funny -- I used to want to put my face in every color too -- my favorite was the deep maroon brick house in my neighborhood with the deep teal shutters and trim.

Counted cross-stitch was my thing for a long time, but I haven't done any in forever. Of course now, with the cats, such a project would be doomed. I imagine Celeste is well behaved with the yarn?

I did happen to wake up once to find my skein of Loden #694 on the floor across the room from the couch, a little worse for wear, but surprisingly un-mauled. My attitude tends to be: if I don't put my toys away, I should fully expect just desserts. Because Celeste doesn't tear my shit apart to get AT the yarn, she just plays with whatever she has access to.

Thank you like, 5 million times for reminding me about Islamic tile design. See, my next step is mastering the finer points of plotting my own designs. With needlepoint, but most especially bargello, which favors multiples of 4, Islamic pattern naturally adapts perfectly to the sorts of stitches that build the motifs.

That Critchlow book is like Ebenezer Butterick on acid (or something better).

There's a very infrequently seen Harry Smith film (No. 15, 1965-66) that goes through patterns of Seminole patchwork that Harry had collected (both front and back). That seems to have a symmetrical editing pattern, but I have only seen it once. Here's more in that regard ( ... )
