True story. Loved the research, hated the papers. So when I disappear like that without writing, it means I've gone delving. Oh letssee. 50-plus inches of snow this winter and I learned to crochet. And when that wasn't enough, and spring started making promises it couldn't keep, I picked up knitting. Obviously, this rabbit hole has barbs so the ( Read more... )

Gorgeous stuff! Your descriptions are equally as fun! I love the "Wine Dark Sea Merino". I really would like to upgrade my knitting from gnarly 20 foot scarves. You should look at contacting chi-chi knitting shops. There's one in Decatur, I'll have a chat with next time I'm in that neck of these woods. A woman I worked with at CNN defected and opened up her own knitting store in Alabama "Taming of the Ewe" (love the name!). Her name's Pat. You might try her scene as well.

At some point, I'll be looking to have an online store for my design and freak stuff, so please do keep us posted on what you learn as you research all of this. How much does Etsy do you for? A friend of mine sells her homemade herbal soaps and beauty stuffs on Amazon where they even handle order fulfillment for her. She just sends them bulk stuff and they ship it out when there are orders.

Love the idea of you brewing up Hyper Action dyes to rend upon Hyperdimensional surfaces.

Can't wait to see what you do with Lace!!!!!

I can't either! What I dread already is the reskeining. 875+ yards means at least 438 wraps around the niddy-noddy. Oh well. Guess that means stronger arms for me.

P.S. Hey Awesomelle, GA hot enough for you to briefly migrate far north sometime this summer?

Wow. You are into some stuff. I usually put on a good movie when I have stuff like that to do that requires more hands and time than thinking. One without subtitles.

I would super SO love to come up North and hang with you this summer!!! I'll chew on it and see when/if that could work. I'm thinkin' to go to Russia in July with friends. Perhaps an Augustine jaunt would be doable to pop up there before y'all freeze up for the Winter.

Did you see this over at purejuice?

What airport serves y'all up there? So, I can keep an eye out for bargain flights.

Also, it's not yarn, but I'm very enamoured with this place and intend to git all up innit. http://www.shapeways.com/

Wired magazine's last Maker edition transmitted some goodness on how to go from 2D to 3D and tangible. I'm visualizing lots of fantastic jewelries.

Have you tried spinning yarn? Very fun stuff. And then you can dye the fiber before spinning, which allows for a whole new range of fascinating color effects, from flashy barberpole yarn to subtle heathering.

I feel like it's only a matter of time before I get sucked further into the fiberarts vortex. As a dyer, what fascinates me most about spinning is the very thing you mentioned.

That's wonderful. I am out of practice having to do anything more than hit "like". I feel like a Tin Man.

It's a small world.. My wife walked in here a while back and said "What is Ridgely's last name?"

Apparently you had favorited her shop on Etsy or one of her items.

I'm not looking up how to embed links here so:

http://www.etsy.com/shop/Spinnerettas

Her experience with Etsy has been pretty good. She is selling enough fiber that she can't keep up with the demand at this point. It takes awhile to build up a following but once you have people buying from you it seems to just snowball.

I have no idea what any of the following means, it is being dictated from the other room -

Retta says the dyers who dislike etsy are moving to something called "Big Cartel". Also you should friend her on Rav her login is "Spinneretta".

And you should ; )

Hope you two are doing well in Maine!

OMG - *SHE's* Spinnerettas! That's TOO amazing. I must have been in the infancy of my fiber freakout when I faved her, just going through being all "bright! shiny! NOM!" Your commanding officer spins some gorgeous yarn, let me tell you. I totally want to pick her brain about all of this: her selling experience, spinning, now dyeing (dyeing kinda takes over, doesn't it? I bet you have like, 8 stockpots now, right?) She uses powders that she mixes with boiling water, right? Please give her my best and let her know she's one of my fiber arts heroes.

P.S. Portland is amazing. Imagine Lovecraft's Arkham, only with lobster, which no one seems to fear.

She uses crock pots to dye in, I don't know about much past that. My involvement here is limited to running electric out to the studio (a large-ish converted garden shed) and other such tasks. The crock pots seem to work well and there is no danger from an open flame or anything else. I honestly don't know much about the process itself. She's got 3-4 of them out there, you can pick them up at garage sales all over for 10$.
