Two goods and one fail

Today was a quiet Sunday for me, because Katy was having 4 of her nursing friends over to study and my friends were all either coxswaining for middle aged women, in a bowling league, or tutoring for spare cash (does that make me lazy?)

I made hollandaise sauce this morning for the first time (for eggs benedict). Katy was excited because she's never had them (it comes with Canadian bacon in restaurants).

It was a small batch, 2 egg yolks, and it went perfectly, until the FAIL. I heated the egg yolks slowly, whisked in butter until the sauce was complete and it was beautiful and glossy, and let it sit in the double boiler over the lowest heat. It must have been too warm or just too much butter, because about 5 minutes later it broke! Julia would be disappointed with me.

Yesterday Katy made a lemon tart in our new tart pan, so now I have excellent tart for lunch and snacks.

I've been meaning to make some mussels, because they are my second favorite shellfish (after oysters), they're cheap and easy to make. I was waiting for a fresh batch to come in to Whole Foods. One came in today, and this evening I made moules mariniere.

(I'm so classy I ate them on the living room table and while watching TV)

I softened some shallots in butter, added parsley and white wine. The mussels steamed for about 4 minutes and that was it! They were quite good, and I'm looking forward to serving mussels now that I'm confident preparing them.
