Fourth of July was fun in North Carolina. It really showed off the benefits of being in the south: beautiful sunny weather all day long, about 86 degrees, and windy.

I made breakfast for the first time since what feels like VT, and really missed all those post-party mornings where Becky etc hung around and ate breakfast with us. I miss you guys, Vermont crowd!

We ate breakfast on our porch:

I finished painting the last of the pots:

(That's an old sea monster, like those which would be depicted on a map)

Katy baked a lot: granola, brownies, and peach pie (not pictured).

Katy's coworker's mother owns a lot with a pool and pool house (but no house), where a party was held. I didn't really know anyone there, but there was lots of good food and the Iranian infants (who are still adorable). We went straight to the Durham Bulls ballpark after that, for the fourth of July game. Fireworks are held there every year, and it's good seating because you can sit so close.

After sunset and before the fireworks I looked up and noticed birds about a hundred feet up! They were just low enough to be lit by the stadium lights. I mistook them for bats at first. They were light-gray and had short wings, and I had no idea what they were. Later I had the idea they might be whipporwills! This is exciting, because it's a bird many of us have heard of, but I'd venture to say no one's seen. I looked them up the next day, and discovered they were Lesser Nighthawks (distinguished from whipporwills by the white ovals on their wings).

After we came home, we discovered the dogs had been productive:

Fortunately, the trash was empty before we left.
